Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the medication report a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become starving," recalled a patient.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural management.
