An Forecasting Platform Participant Earned $436K on Wagers on Venezuela's Political Shift.
A bettor profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro just before it was made public, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of American actions.
Market Movement in Predictions
Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the end of January rose in the period preceding Donald Trump stated on Saturday that the president had been seized.
A single trader, which registered on the site recently and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a starting bet of over $32,000.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Probability Spikes Before News Break
Platform data shows that participants assessed the probability of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the midday period of the prior Friday.
But the market's assessment had increased to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the first hours of Saturday, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity right before the official statement was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a bet based on non-public details," said an industry expert.
Several of other platform users also made large payouts from similar wagers.
Legal Questions Emerges
Politicians are beginning to pay attention.
A new rule presented on recently seeks to ban federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the past few years, with traders able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.
The industry were examined under the previous administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.
Insider trading is a crime in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market space.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
